This little attachment saved me about 2 days of working on my hands and knees chiseling out my grout lines with a hammer and screwdriver.Well worth the money.
I had really thin grout lines however I think the cover would be great for grout 1/8" or larger. Worked great and saved me a lot of time, but I found that it worked better without the plastic cover attached.
The included bit is even smaller. A completely ineffective tool. But it is not.
In addition, the plastic base has two notches to guide the tool in the grout joint. Sounds like a cool idea but a complete waste of money. But the grout grinds away these notches after about 10 minutes of work.
I purchased this tool thinking that it would be faster than removing grout by hand. With this tool, it takes ten times that. Do yourself a favour and don't buy it.
It is extremely slow even with a full 1/8 inch carbide tip bit - not supplied. By hand, with a double bladed hand-held small grout saw I was able to remove 1/4 inch grout at a 3 feet per minute pace.
like several reviewers, I found the bit useful for freehand removal of grout but the attachment is awkward
Then I cleared everything out of the room and put a drop cloth down as I read there would be a lot of dust. I had a plumbing leak and was pondering how I was going to remove the section of tile (about a 3'X3' section) on the wall behind the plumbing problem so I could get our shower valve and plumbing replaced. He mentioned that they make a Grout Removal Kit which should be perfect for the job. I highly recommend this kit if you need to remove some grout though if you have to remove an entire shower enclosure's worth of tile it would probably take some time.
I did not break any bits. There WAS a lot of dust though but that only makes sense. It took me about an hour and a half and I'm not sure how many times I went over the grout (increasing the depth each time) but this grout removal tool worked great. I also made sure I "pulled" the dremel to me and not pushed the bit forward.
I purchased the Drumel and two spare bits just in case (I had read the reviews which mentioned broken bits). I followed the instructions making sure I only did 1/8" at a time and increasing by 1/8" each time I went over the grout. I spoke with a friend and he said what you need is a Drumel. The grout I had to remove was about 1/4" wide so I made sure the additional bits I purchased were the large ones (1/8").
I did this because there was at least one review that mentioned that as long as you follow the instructions exactly it should work fine. I read some of the reviews here and wasn't sure it would work or not since it worked for some and not for others. After I got home I read the instructions on the Grout Removal Kit and made sure I understood how to properly use it.
